Lake Rabun

  • Lake Rabun is a twisty, 835-acre (3.4 square kilometer) reservoir with 25 miles (40 kilometers) of shoreline located in Rabun County, in the northeastern corner of Georgia . It is the third lake in a series of six lakes that follow the original course of the Tallulah River.

  • History: Lake Rabun’s Mathis Dam was completed in May 1915, but the lake wasn’t filled for ten years due to construction of a one-mile-long tunnel between the lake and the power generator at Tallulah Falls. By 1925, the lake became a popular destination, especially for residents of Atlanta who would make the day-long trip by car to enjoy the area.

  • Today, Lake Rabun is a popular recreation spot offering activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming. There are also many communities and vacation homes around the lake.
